What we built

Every screen has a different pixel density. A 27-inch 4K monitor packs 163 pixels per inch; a modern smartphone can exceed 460 PPI. Most online rulers ignore this completely and assume 96 PPI — the old web standard — which can be off by 60% or more on today's hardware.

Real Online Ruler solves this with a one-time calibration step. Once you set your screen's PPI — using auto-detect, screen diagonal entry, or a physical credit card — the ruler renders at genuine actual size. Every tick mark lands where it physically should. Your calibration is stored in the browser so every future visit is immediately accurate.

Features

  • Dual-scale display: centimetres on top, inches on bottom — simultaneously.
  • Three calibration methods: auto-detect, screen diagonal, ISO credit card.
  • Snap ruler to any screen edge or float it freely anywhere on the page.
  • Protractor tool for angle measurement.
  • Dark mode, keyboard shortcuts, multiple rulers, opacity control.
  • Works offline after the first load — no network required.

Who uses it

Graphic designers checking print dimensions before sending to press. Hobbyists measuring parts for 3D printing or model making. Students doing science or maths homework. Shoppers checking whether a product will fit a space. Anyone who needs a quick, reliable measurement without finding a physical ruler.

Our commitment

The tool is and will remain free. We do not require an account, collect personal data, or show ads that interfere with measurement. Calibration data stays in your browser's localStorage — it never leaves your device.
